Here is the true story behind Call On Me.

I used to be a member of the Daft Crew forums. In late 2002 (or thereabouts, could have even been early 2003), a forum member requested an ID on a sample. He'd been to a DJ Falcon club appearance the night before, and Falcon had mixed a song in from his laptop, which he didn't recognize, and he took to be a new Bangalter/Falcon tune. At the time, we were all waiting with baited breath to see what they would come up with, and it was long rumoured they were working on an album together. Anyway, the forum member had bootlegged the set and posted a clip online, so I ID'd the sample as Steve Winwood's "Valerie". Of course, "Call On Me" (as we were calling it) wasn't available anywhere at that point, so some of the forum members (I forget who), took the bootleg, chopped and filtered it up into a full length version for the members of the board. This version was subsequently put on P2P networks, and later white labelled (the person who made the full length version confirmed it was their work).

About a year later, the Prydz rip-off appeared. Again, a forum member had a ticket to see DJ Falcon play a DJ set, so at this gig he asked Falcon about "Call On Me". Falcon confirmed it had originally come from him and Thomas Bangalter, they had plans to release it, but they apparently couldn't get sample clearance and so were stuck only being able to play it in live sets. He said that there was nothing they could do about the Prydz rip-off.

Anyone who was around the Daft Crew forums at this time could confirm this story for you, or if you could get hold of the forums from that time you could read it for yourself. In fact, the whole "Call On Me" thing actually kicked up a running argument between guys who liked the loop-style tracks that were appearing, and guys who didn't (like me!).

Whoa! That is TOTALLY SCREWED UP! Are there any ideas as to why they couldn't get it cleared, but Prydz did?

the thing is that Prydz didnīt actually sample Winwood, instead he agreed on recording the vocals fresh for the prydz track.

I see, but I think Bangalter & Falcon should have all the glory of a track that will be "remembered for years to come."
I guess in a way it's still fair because I'm sure they could've done the same thing, but didn't come up with that idea.
But then again, it's still unfair because it is SO obvious as a rip-off!

UPDATE

EDIT: I was just reminded by another post on this forum of who made the MP3 that was white-labelled. It was a guy called Daftmafia, a member of the Daft Crew boards. Just to be sure, I did a search and came up with an archived post I did on another board! http://www.samplecity.net/forum/printthread.php?t=28328

AND HERE'S A CACHED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL DAFT CREW FORUM PAGE, WITH THE CONVERSATION IN QUESTION. http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:Wh4kq8lfmkkJ:daftcrew.on-da-rocks.com/viewtopic.php%3Ft%3D907+Daftmafia+Call+On+Me&hl=en

FYI: In January 2005 Eric Prydz was the artist to sell the lowest number of singles for a #1 chart position in any particular week: "Call On Me" only sold 23,519 copies when it returned to the top of the charts on October 17, 2004. This record was broken once again by himself only a week later on October 24, 2004, with the song only selling 21,749 copies that week.
